From a farm nestled amongst the Hiraethog Mountains above the Conwy Valley two brothers, Gwyn and Elwy Williams, are busy inventing new uses for the lamb from their Suffolk and Texel crossbred flock of 800. Trading as Arlwyo Nant Catering, their lamb burgers and lamb steaks are now selling fast from their recently acquired catering trailer at events and shows from Shrewsbury across to Pwllheli.

The brothers and their parents, Pendri and Gwyneth, have been farming sheep and beef from Ty Nant Isaf at Pandy Tudur for 45 years and were becoming concerned about the farm’s long term viability.

“With the downward trend in market prices we’ve been looking at ways to add value to our lamb and boost farm income,” said Gwyn. Encouragement from other farmers involved in the local Agrisgôp group, led by Menter a Busnes, convinced them of their decision to diversify. “We’ve been mulling on the idea of our own mobile catering trailer for years” said Elwy, “and the great thing about selling products from our own lamb is that you achieve a rapid return on your investment.” Gwyn and Elwy developed their own recipes for Traditional, Mint and Chilli Lamb Burgers, which are manufactured only 12 miles away in Denbigh, where the lamb is also slaughtered and processed. “We are very keen to ensure our products are as genuine as possible,” explains Gwyn, “so we don’t allow any preservatives, include only natural ingredients and keep our recipes relatively simple and straightforward. Unlike some other burger manufacturers, we use only the best cuts of lamb.”

Launching their new business at Caerwys Show on 10th June this year from their newly refurbished trailer, visitors to the show flocked to try their burgers, lamb steaks, lamb and leek sausages, local bacon and free range eggs from hens tended by Gwyn's son, Harri. They have obviously started out as they mean to continue, with the pair serving up to 150 meals per hour to an evidently hungry market at numerous events across North Wales and the borders.
