When Sandy Luthe accidentally enrolled on an Advanced English course while studying Sociology at University in Bangor little did she think that the top marks gained in her second language would help her promote a local produce delivery business which she would establish nearby only a few years later.
Having met her future husband while in North Wales, three years on she left her home in East Germany to settle in Penrhyn Bay. Experience working for a women’s housing association and the arrival of her son, Jake, prompted her to start thinking about the difficulties of accessing healthy, local food for working and disadvantaged families. “I really wanted to provide a healthy diet for

Jake,” she says “and I noticed how few independent food retailers still exist in the face of competition from the chain stores.” Since arriving in the area she had also noticed a scarcity of sources of local, organic vegetables and produce.
Armed with a personal interest and advice from Conwy Enterprise Agency and Business Eye, Sandy set about finding a range of good local products from across the area. Her father, “a bit of a computer wizard!”, helped her set up a website and, in February 2008, Scrumptious Sandy’s Local Produce was launched with the first of the business’ weekly, weekend deliveries to homes and businesses throughout the area.

Adding to her list of products all the time, Sandy currently supplies beef, lamb and pork from “happy animals” at Dolwen Farm, Bryn Dowsi Farm’s organic lamb, Denbigh Farm chickens and eggs and smoked fish from award-winning Derimon Smokery. With cheeses and dairy products from South Caernarfon Creameries, Snowdonia Cheese and Cwt Caws, hydroponically grown salads and fruit from Broga and other vegetables from Llanrwst Farm, Bryn Tatws and Pyllau Glaewen Farm in the Conwy Valley, all that remains is to mention the range of speciality breads, cakes and savouries made by Becws Alun from Penmaenmawr. “I’m always looking for more local products, especially ones which aren’t readily available in the county,” Sandy explains. “I hope soon to have Anglesey Apples’ juice and fruits. Plus I’m really looking forward to delivering turkeys, ducks and geese from Eglwysbach this Christmas.”
Taking orders by phone at the start of the week, Sandy heads out on Fridays and Saturdays with a van full of delicious goodies which she delivers personally to homes, offices and holiday cottages across Conwy county. Of the impact of what she is doing on the local food economy, Sandy says “I hope I’m making people in Conwy, and visitors, more aware that their food doesn’t have to travel hundreds of miles to reach their plates because we have a great selection of really good food made on our doorstep. Hopefully I’m making that same food easier to get hold of. And, in the process, I feel good that I’m supporting local producers.”
